Surviving the Grad School Application Process 101

Applying for graduate programs can almost be as overwhelming as being enrolled in them. With all of the time and energy that goes into each application, it’s easy to lose sight of what you hope to accomplish. That being said, if you are taking on this responsibility, you aren’t alone. Many people each year try to further their education by going after higher degrees. Here are some tips to keep in mind when going through the grad school application process.

Don’t Stress

The first mistake that most people make when applying to graduate programs is getting bogged down by all of the stress that comes along with the experience. Here is the best thing you can do: relax. One of the best ways to keep from psyching yourself out is by staying organized. Keep track of exactly what you need to do for each school, as well as when each task needs to be completed. Daily planners are your friends.

Start Early

Give yourself plenty of time to get everything done. As soon as you begin thinking about working toward an additional degree, start your research. Look around at schools and find the ones that best suit your academic and professional goals. Find out what people do with their lives after earning this degree. If you aren’t willing to put in the time to do the homework, then graduate school probably isn’t the right place for you.

Read Instructions Carefully

“Attention to detail” isn’t just something that people put on their resume to make themselves seem more hirable. It is a necessity, particularly in the world of academia. If you don’t give schools exactly what they ask for, it's a huge red flag, and you will make their decision that much easier. Adhere to the word count, send all the required materials, and do whatever else is asked of you.

Keep it Professional

You don’t want your application materials to seem like they were slapped together at the very last minute. Use a confidence and vocabulary that is relevant to your field of study. Show the application reviewer that you have a passion for the subject, as well as the capability to hold your own when studying it.

Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

Proofread. I can’t stress that enough. If your application has errors, it will probably be disregarded on the spot. Even the most impressive content won’t make up for an application that isn’t up to the standards of the professional world. Save yourself some embarrassment by having professors and colleagues look it over before turning in the final product.

Be Open and Honest

Be yourself. If you try to create an artificial version of yourself, grad school admissions are going to be able to see right through the facade. Being genuine can take you a long way. When an application looks too good to be true, it probably is. If your GPA took a hit sophomore year when your mother had health problems, be honest about it. Don’t try to hide the blemishes on your academic record.
