Homeschooling: Pros and Cons

Are you thinking about homeschooling your child, but you’re just not sure if it’s the right way to go? Homeschooling has become more popular than ever before, but popular does not equal easy. The decision to homeschool is a big decision that has a lot of pros and cons.

Pro: Homeschooled children have more educational freedom, because they learn according to their interests and learning styles. This makes it easier for them to comprehend the subjects taught, and they tend to retain the information better.

Con: As a parent, you cannot only choose to cater to your child's strengths; you must be able to point out your child's weaknesses and help them improve in those areas. While we may not like to see our children failing in certain areas, it is up to us to make sure they get the information and retain it well.

Pro: As a parent, you have more control over what your children are taught. Most parents can appreciate this, because they often feel like their children are not being taught enough on particular subjects in public schools.

Pro: The cost of a curriculum for the entire year with homeschooling is cheaper than one month at a private school. This allows parents to give their children a quality education while saving money.

Con: You must take full responsibility of your child's education, which means that you will be responsible for purchasing all of your child's materials for learning. Not to mention, dealing with a special or gifted child can be difficult because you have to figure out their needs and address them appropriately.

Pro: On top of saving money, parents are able to shelter their children from all of the negative influences that might come their way in public schools. You can also be confident that your child will be able to focus and not face distractions that could cripple their progress.

Pro: Homeschooled children are able to progress as slowly or as quickly as needed based on their abilities. Your child will not have to worry about keeping up with everyone else and will have the time to really take in what he or she learns.
