How to Be Successful in Massage Therapy School

You've chosen a growing career in massage therapy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is expected to see a 23 percent increase in demand through 2022. Success starts in the massage therapy program you've selected. Make it the best possible experience to insure you have a good start in your career.

Find Your Passion
Early on in the program, discover what you are really passionate about in the field of massage. Is it working with the muscles of the body, or the psychology of the client? Is it a particular technique? This is what comes across as you talk and work with clients. When you’re excited to go to work every day, you and your clients both have a better experience.

Learn to Listen
Massage therapists spend a great deal of time listening to their clients, both before the session and during. This helps pinpoint what is bothering a client and what may be the cause of the issue. You will often become as much a counselor to the client as massage therapist.

Get Intimate with the Body
Learn about the human body inside and out. Don't gloss over the anatomy and physiology classes because they will become your link to relieving your clients’ aches and pains. Many times the body over-compensates for a painful area. The muscles that appear to be the issue may not actually be the source of pain. Understanding how the muscles and nerves work together allows you to track down the true point of discomfort.

Practice Self-Care
Massage therapy can be physically and mentally challenging for you. You can go home from work feeling sore and emotionally drained. Talk to your teachers about how they take care of themselves. Learn correct body mechanics so you will stay healthy. Give your mind a rest after a full day of clients.

Start Networking Early
Get involved in student groups and professional massage organizations while in school. Meet other therapists and ask about their practices. Get tips from them on running a business, finding clients, and keeping them. Build up your professional network while you're in school so you'll have an edge when looking for your first job.

Learn Time Management
This skill will help you plan all of the studying, practice, and tests you do while in school. More importantly, it will develop your ability to manage your time when working with clients. Good time management skills help you fit all of your clients, administrative work, and continuing education into your busy weeks.

Act Like a Professional
Don't wait until you're out of school to cultivate a professional image. Begin seeing yourself as a professional massage therapist. Order business cards, create a website, and create a LinkedIn profile to gain visibility.

Keep Current
Watch online for news items related to massage therapy. It could be information about why clients seek out a massage or healthy diets and lifestyle choices. Keeping current helps you connect with your teacher and peers. It also gives you information to share with your future clients.

Pay attention to the details in your program because they are what make an effective massage therapist. Start to network and create your professional image early to increase your job chances. Your success in school will carry over to your experience with your first job and clients.
